Lana Wachowski, Matrix and Cloud Atlas writer-director, accepts HRC’s Visibility Award and uses the space to tell her story about finding herself, shedding her “private civic life” and even mentions Gwen Araujo (1985-2002), for which I of course could not help but shed tears over. For me, Gwen, a young Latina trans woman, is a major trigger because we were about the same age, intersected on many pivotal points in our journey, yet as I headed off to college, she was murdered.
I appreciate Lana using this space to mention Gwen, discuss limitations of transition narratives in media and even reveal her personal suicidal actions. I’m glad to have another sister elevating the conversation about who we are.
